A Message From The Spiritual Director PDF  | Print |  E-mail
I have a confession to make. I have secretly always wanted to be one of those weather guys you see on TV during a hurricane. You know the ones....

“We are now going to Jim Cantori who is in front of the Ocean Drive Fish Market.”

I mean.... I could do that!

It seems there’s always two weather situations you see on television during hurricanes. There’s one where the weather guy is out where it’s really bad.... you know.... during a category five hurricane! When the camera cuts to him, he is usually getting slammed into a telephone pole by the 145 mile-per-hour winds. You stare at your TV screen and scream...

“Dude...get outta there!! Save yourself! It's every man for himself! Leave!!!!”

The second situation is the one where nothing is happening. That’s when the reporter is tempted to make things sound more exciting than they really are.

“We now switch to Ken Land in front of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion…”

That’s me reporting from a scene of obvious dead calm.

I say,

“As you can see, things are really getting tense here. We had a stick blow down an hour ago. And if you look close at this long-haired Golden Retriever behind me, you can see his fur ruffle in the breeze.”

It was as I was entertaining this daydream that I thought about how all of our lives get hit by storms. And there is no a question of whether you will get hit, even if you are a Christian. We all have been hit by storms and we all will probably be hit again in the future. That's the nature of life.

My pastor reminded me and my congregation recently of the story Jesus told in Matthew about the guy who built his house on sand. The winds came, the rain fell, and the house was blown apart. But the guy who built his house on a rock had a different fate. The winds came and the rains fell.... and his house stood.

Jesus is the ROCK! There is nothing more important than building our lives on that ROCK and sharing what we know and have experienced through Christ with others.

At Chrysalis, we have the privilege of sharing the ROCK with teen friends and acquaintances who are facing life’s storms. It is a privilege and honor to be used by God in such a way! As such, let’s not send those we love off into the storm alone. I urge you to pray for the flights. Pray that others may come to a full knowledge of Christ. Pray for the teams. Pray that others may build their lives on the one ROCK that will never let them go.

The old hymn says it well,

On Christ the solid Rock I stand,

All other ground is sinking sand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

Our Deepest Fear
by Marianne Williamson from A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

The experience lets boys and girls know
